Chandoli is home to several ancient sacred groves, among which Ambaiwada Sacred Grove is particularly remarkable for its rich natural heritage. According to some researchers, the trees found here may be more than 500 years old.

The sacred grove covers approximately 30 acres and preserves a stretch of ancient forest. The trees reach heights of around 80–100 feet, and visitors can observe numerous ancient climbing vines growing throughout the forest.

The grove offers excellent opportunities for nature enthusiasts and wildlife observers to study Indian giant squirrels (Shekru), owls, hornbills, several rare bird species, snakes and other forms of wildlife. Its biodiversity changes with each season.

A guided visit takes approximately two hours. Road access to the grove became available around 2021–2022. Ambaiwada Sacred Grove is a remarkable example of community-led forest conservation — the local people of Ambaiwada have protected this sacred forest for hundreds of years. As the grove lies adjacent to the core zone of the tiger reserve, it provides valuable opportunities to observe the region’s rich biodiversity.

Ukhalu Waterfall

Duration of Visit: 3 hrsMode of Transport: Private Vehicle and WalkBest Time to Visit: June to Jan

Ukhalu Waterfall is a beautiful and relatively less-visited natural attraction in the Chandoli region. The waterfall generally flows from June to January. Visitors can reach the waterfall by travelling approximately one kilometre uphill from Ukhalu village. A trail leading to the waterfall passes through the Ambaiwada settlement on the hill.

As the waterfall is located within a forested area, hiring a local guide is essential for navigation. Reaching the waterfall requires descending a steep slope. Visitors should be physically fit, comfortable walking on uneven forest trails, and prepared to follow the guide’s instructions. The route may become slippery and challenging, particularly during the monsoon.

Due to the steep terrain and demanding walking conditions, this trek is generally unsuitable for elderly visitors, people with mobility limitations, and very young children below 6 years. Swimming or entering the plunge pool should only be considered when expressly permitted and assessed as safe by responsible local authorities or guides.

  • Leeches along the trail: leeches can be abundant during the rainy season — wear suitable trekking footwear and protective clothing.
  • Physical fitness: the route involves extended walking and uneven, potentially slippery terrain.
  • Guided access: travel only with the required permissions and an authorised local guide.
